AYSO run’s on volunteer Coaches who are typically parents of players because those Coaches will invest in the players’ desire to have fun while learning the skills necessary to play soccer. They are not doing it for the money, instead they are doing it help develop a healthy child with a positive attitude who knows something about teamwork, effort and good sportsmanship.

Although the primary role of a Coach is to make sure the players are learning the skills of the game, previous soccer experience is NOT a prerequisite to becoming a coach; AYSO will teach you the skills needed for the age level you will be coaching. Unique age-appropriate coach training is one of AYSO's specialties. If you have the desire to be a coach, we have the tools to help get you there.

If you are still unsure if you can be a Coach, just know that Coaching children can be a very rewarding experience and coaching your own child's team can be one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of all!

Make a difference in your Child’s life, become a coach today. Instructions for signing up to Coach are listed on the next tab “How to Become a Coach”!!!

In order to become a coach, it takes 3 steps:

  1. Every volunteer must register annually in our Regional Management System (RMS) known as  Blue Sombrero. There are two main reasons you must register annually: you are required to do annual background checks (see Step 2) and you have to accept the insurance and liability policies each Membership Year. Please make note of your AYSO volunteer ID#, your ID# is needed to sign up for the Online coaching classes as well as the In-Person classes.
  2. Each volunteer must get a background check through Verified Volunteers. Once you register in Blue Sombrero, an email will be sent to you regarding this step.  There is a $25 fee and Region 1455 covers this for potential volunteers. (This payment DOES NOT guarantee that the Volunteer application will be approved by the region).
  3. You must get Safe Haven certified, CDC Concussion certified, Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Coach certified for the age you are going to coach in order to move from potential coach to actual coach. As of 2022, SafeSport Certification is a CA requirement for all youth volunteers.  Check out the next Tab for courses.
